Australia is a continent (7.7 million km²) — you could spend months barely scratching the surface. New Zealand is compact (268,000 km²) — you can road-trip both islands in 3–4 weeks. If you have limited time, New Zealand delivers more diverse scenery per mile. If you have unlimited time, Australia's sheer variety is unmatched.
Landscapes
New Zealand packs fjords, glaciers, volcanoes, rainforests, beaches, and alpine peaks into a tiny area — it's the filming location for Lord of the Rings for good reason. Australia offers the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, the Outback, tropical rainforests, and over 10,000 beaches. New Zealand's landscapes are more varied per square kilometer; Australia's are more extreme and vast.
Adventure
New Zealand is the adventure capital of the world — bungee jumping (invented here), skydiving, jet boating, heli-skiing, canyoning, and the Great Walks tramping. Australia offers excellent diving (Great Barrier Reef), surfing (Gold Coast, Byron Bay), and outback touring. For adrenaline seekers, New Zealand has more adventure options packed closer together.
Wildlife
Australia wins with unique and abundant wildlife — kangaroos, koalas, wombats, platypus, crocodiles, whale sharks, and the world's most venomous creatures. New Zealand has excellent marine wildlife (whales in Kaikōura, dolphins, penguins) but fewer land animals. The Great Barrier Reef alone is a wildlife experience without parallel.
Costs
Similar in many ways. Australia's flights within the country are cheaper (competitive domestic airlines). New Zealand's campervanning culture offers great budget accommodation. Food and drink: Australia is slightly cheaper for everyday meals; New Zealand has better wine value. Both countries are more expensive than most of Southeast Asia or South America.

Choose Australia for beaches, wildlife, the Great Barrier Reef, and city culture (Sydney, Melbourne). With limited time, New Zealand delivers more bang per day. With more time, Australia's diversity is unbeatable.
