Best Time to Visit Thailand: Dry Season, Monsoon & Island Guide (2026)

Thailand's Three Seasons

Thailand has three distinct seasons: hot (March–May), rainy/monsoon (June–October), and cool/dry (November–February). The cool dry season is the most popular tourist period with comfortable temperatures and minimal rainfall. However, each season has its advantages depending on what you want to do and where you want to go.

Cool & Dry Season (November–February): Peak Season

This is the ideal time for most visitors. Temperatures range from 20–32°C with low humidity and almost no rain. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) are at their best. Expect higher prices and more crowds, especially around Christmas and New Year. The famous Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan draws thousands each month.

Hot Season (March–May): Budget-Friendly Heat

Temperatures soar to 35–40°C, especially in Bangkok and central Thailand. However, this is Songkran season — Thailand's famous water festival (April 13–15) is one of Asia's wildest celebrations. Flights and hotels are cheaper. The Andaman coast islands (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta) are still excellent in March before the monsoon arrives.

Monsoon Season (June–October): Hidden Gem Period

Rain comes in short, heavy afternoon bursts rather than all-day downpours. Landscapes are lush and green, waterfalls are at their most impressive, and tourist numbers drop dramatically. Prices fall 30–50%. Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai) and the Gulf islands remain relatively dry during this period.

Regional Differences

Thailand's geography creates different weather patterns across regions. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) is best November–April. The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) is best January–September. Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai) is best November–February. Bangkok is best November–February but viable year-round.

Our Recommendation

Visit November–February for the best overall experience. For budget travelers, June–October offers dramatic savings with still-enjoyable weather. For festival lovers, April's Songkran is unforgettable. Use our climate data to compare monthly temperatures and rainfall for your specific Thai destinations.
