Best Time to Visit Greece: Islands, Mainland & Festival Guide (2026)

Greece's Ideal Windows

Greece has two sweet spots: late May to mid-June and September to mid-October. These periods offer warm sea temperatures, sunny skies, and significantly fewer tourists than July–August peak season. Water temperatures reach 22–25°C, ferries run frequently, and hotel prices are 20–40% lower than peak.

Peak Summer (July–August)

The Cyclades (Santorini, Mykonos) and Crete are packed with tourists and prices peak. Temperatures hit 35°C+. However, the Meltemi wind keeps the Aegean islands cooler than the mainland. Nightlife on Mykonos and Ios is at its best. This is the only reliable time for the more remote islands (Karpathos, Ikaria, Fourni) when ferry schedules are fullest.

Shoulder Season (May–June, September–October)

The best overall period. Sea is warm enough for swimming (especially September), archaeological sites are uncrowded, and locals are relaxed and welcoming. Greek Easter (varies, usually April/May) is a spectacular cultural celebration worth planning around. Olive and grape harvests in autumn add a food-tourism dimension.

Winter (November–March)

Most islands shut down almost completely. Athens and Thessaloniki are pleasant with mild temperatures (8–15°C) and virtually no tourists. Archaeological sites are empty — you can have the Acropolis nearly to yourself. Hotels in Athens offer steep discounts. Crete stays mild year-round and its western coast remains pleasant for hiking.

Our Recommendation

For island hopping, target late May to mid-June or September. For Athens and mainland culture, spring or autumn. For budget travel, November in Athens offers incredible value. Check our Greece guide for island-specific recommendations and ferry schedules.
