Top Places to Visit

Juche Tower — A 170-metre stone tower on the banks of the Taedong River in Pyongyang, built in 1982 to celebrate the Juche ideology. An elevator takes visitors to the top for panoramic city views.

Kim Il-sung Square — The vast central square of Pyongyang, used for military parades and mass rallies. Flanked by government buildings and the Grand People's Study House, it overlooks the Taedong River.

Kumsusan Palace of the Sun — The mausoleum where the embalmed bodies of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il lie in state. Visits require formal dress and solemn behaviour. Photography is prohibited inside.

DMZ / Panmunjom — The heavily fortified border between North and South Korea. Visitors see the Joint Security Area, the blue UN buildings straddling the border, and the Armistice signing hall.

Mount Kumgang — A scenic mountain range on the east coast with dramatic granite peaks, waterfalls, and Buddhist temples. Access has been intermittent due to inter-Korean politics.

Pyongyang Cold Noodles (Naengmyeon) — Buckwheat noodles served in an icy beef broth with sliced egg, pickled radish, and mustard \u2014 Pyongyang's most famous dish, served at the Okryu Restaurant.

Korean BBQ — Grilled meats (typically duck, pork, or clam) cooked at the table, served with dipping sauces, garlic, and leafy wraps. Available at tourist restaurants in Pyongyang.

Kimchi — Fermented vegetables \u2014 primarily napa cabbage and radish \u2014 prepared in a distinctly northern style that tends to be less spicy and more watery than southern varieties.

Rice Cakes (Tteok) — Glutinous rice cakes filled with sweet red bean paste or coated in sesame \u2014 served at festivals and special meals throughout the country.
