Top Places to Visit

Etosha National Park — Etosha's vast salt pan and the waterholes along its edge attract enormous concentrations of game in the dry season — lion, elephant, rhino, and leopard at Okaukuejo and Halali.

Sossusvlei and Deadvlei — Red dunes up to 380m high — climb Big Daddy or Dune 45 at sunrise. Deadvlei's white pan and ancient dead trees are one of Africa's most photographed landscapes.

Skeleton Coast — The foggy Atlantic coast — Cape Cross seal colony (100,000+ seals), shipwrecks on the beach, and the dramatic meeting of desert and ocean. Fly-in lodges or day trips from Swakopmund.

Damaraland — Vast desert landscape — desert-adapted elephant and black rhino, Twyfelfontein's UNESCO rock engravings, and the Petrified Forest. Guided drives from lodges in the area.

Fish River Canyon — The second largest canyon in the world — 160km long, 27km wide. Viewpoints from Hobas; multi-day hike (May–September) for the adventurous.

Game Meat — Oryx, kudu, and springbok — grilled or in stews. Many lodges and Windhoek restaurants serve game. Lean and flavourful.

Swakopmund Seafood — Fresh fish and shellfish in Swakopmund — the cold Atlantic waters supply excellent cod, sole, and oysters. German-style beer gardens and seafood restaurants.
