Genghis Khan Statue Complex — A 40-metre stainless steel statue of Genghis Khan on horseback, 54 km east of Ulaanbaatar. Climb to the horse's head for steppe panoramas. The base houses a museum of Bronze Age and Mongol Empire artifacts.

Terelj National Park — Rolling green hills, bizarre rock formations (including Turtle Rock), and the Aryabal Meditation Temple set in pine forests \u2014 the most accessible wilderness from Ulaanbaatar.

Gobi Desert — The Gobi stretches across southern Mongolia with the Khongoryn Els sand dunes (up to 300m high), the Flaming Cliffs fossil site, and Yolyn Am ice canyon. Camel riding is a highlight.

Kh\u00f6vsg\u00f6l Lake — A vast freshwater alpine lake near the Siberian border, surrounded by forested mountains and home to the Tsaatan reindeer herders. Crystal-clear water and complete silence.

Erdene Zuu Monastery — Built in 1585 on the ruins of the ancient Mongol capital Karakorum, enclosed by a wall of 108 stupas. One of the few monasteries to survive the 1930s purges, partly restored.

Buuz (Steamed Dumplings) — Steamed dumplings filled with minced mutton and onion \u2014 Mongolia's most beloved dish, eaten year-round and especially during Tsagaan Sar (Lunar New Year).

Khuushuur (Fried Pastry) — Deep-fried flat dumplings filled with seasoned mutton \u2014 the quintessential Naadam festival food, eaten by the dozen from stalls around the stadium.

Airag (Fermented Mare's Milk) — Slightly sour, mildly alcoholic fermented mare's milk \u2014 Mongolia's national drink, offered to every guest in a ger. An acquired taste but central to nomadic hospitality.

Tsuivan (Noodle Stew) — Hand-pulled noodles stir-fried with mutton and vegetables (carrots, cabbage, potatoes) in a heavy pan \u2014 hearty comfort food found in every Mongolian canteen.
