Sani Pass — A 4x4-only track climbing 1,300 metres up the Drakensberg escarpment from KwaZulu-Natal into the Lesotho plateau — hairpin bends cut into the cliff face, extraordinary views over the South African lowlands, and the Sani Top Chalet at the summit.

Ts'ehlanyane National Park — A remote highland wilderness in the Maluti Mountains — montane grassland, patches of indigenous forest, the Ts'ehlanyane River gorge, and extraordinary panoramic views across the Lesotho plateau. The park receives very few visitors.

Katse Dam — The double-curvature arch Katse Dam — 185m high and one of Africa's great engineering achievements — holds back the Malibamatso River in a mountain gorge and transfers water to South Africa. The visitor centre and dam wall walk are extraordinary.

Sehlabathebe National Park — A remote plateau park in the far southeast — sandstone formations, San rock art, alpine wetlands, bearded vultures overhead, and a landscape of extraordinary peace accessible only by 4x4 or on horseback from the Drakensberg escarpment.

Maseru — A small, walkable capital with a lively market selling Basotho blankets and crafts, the Basotho Hat shop (shaped like a conical Basotho hat), and the gateway to the surrounding mountain landscape.

Local Food

Papa and Morogo — Papa is Lesotho's stiff maize porridge — identical to South African pap — served with morogo (wild spinach or pumpkin leaves) and braised lamb or chicken. The foundation of every Basotho meal, eaten from a communal pot.

Grilled Lamb and Offal — The Basotho are herders — lamb and mutton are the primary meats, grilled over an open fire or slow-cooked in a potjie. Sheep head and offal braai (skop and skilpadjies) are beloved at rural gatherings and roadside stops.

Trout from the Mountain Streams — The highland streams of Lesotho are stocked with rainbow and brown trout introduced in the colonial era — caught and grilled fresh at lodges like Malealea, they are extraordinarily good in the mountain air.

Mageu and Fat Cakes — Mageu is a fermented sorghum drink — thin, sour, and drunk cold from plastic packets at any market or taxi rank. Fat cakes (fried dough balls) are the universal street snack, sold from oil-drum fryers at every roadside.
