Luang Prabang — Saffron-robed monks file through French-colonial streets at dawn. Over 30 gilded temples, a night market, and the sacred Mount Phousi at the Mekong\u2019s bend.

Kuang Si Falls — A three-tiered waterfall tumbling into milky-turquoise pools surrounded by jungle. A bear rescue centre sits at the entrance. Best in dry season.

Vang Vieng — Towering limestone karsts along the Nam Song River. Once a party town, now reborn with kayaking, caving, hot-air balloon rides, and tubing.

Local Food

Laap — Minced meat (pork, chicken, duck, or fish) mixed with roasted rice powder, lime juice, fish sauce, fresh herbs, and chilies. The national dish of Laos.

Sticky Rice (Khao Niao) — Eaten with every meal, rolled into balls by hand, and dipped into laap, jeow (chili paste), or soups. Served in small woven bamboo baskets.

Khao Piak Sen — A comforting Lao noodle soup with thick hand-rolled rice noodles in a starchy, fragrant chicken or pork broth. The ultimate rainy-day meal.

Tam Mak Hoong — Lao-style green papaya salad pounded in a mortar with padaek (fermented fish paste), lime, chilies, and crab. Spicier and more pungent than the Thai version.
