Top Places to Visit

Stone Town — A maze of narrow alleys, coral stone buildings, ornate carved wooden doors, and hidden courtyards. The UNESCO-listed old quarter is one of Africa's most atmospheric urban spaces, best explored by wandering aimlessly.

House of Wonders (Beit-al-Ajaib) — The largest and tallest building in Stone Town, built in 1883 as a ceremonial palace. It was the first building in East Africa with electricity and an elevator. Currently under restoration after a partial collapse.

Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe) — A 17th-century Omani fort that now hosts a cultural center with live music and dance performances in the amphitheater on most evenings. The oldest building in Stone Town.

Forodhani Gardens — A waterfront park that transforms each evening into Zanzibar's most famous food market — grilled octopus, Zanzibar pizza, sugarcane juice, and seafood skewers under the stars.

Anglican Cathedral (Christ Church) — A cathedral built in 1873-80 directly on the site of the former slave market. The altar stands where the whipping post once stood. The underground slave chambers can still be visited.

Local Food

Zanzibar Pizza — Not Italian pizza at all — a thin crepe-like dough filled with minced meat, egg, onions, peppers, and cheese, folded and fried on a griddle. Best at the Forodhani Gardens night market.

Grilled Octopus & Lobster — Fresh from the Indian Ocean — octopus grilled with lime and spices, or whole lobster split and chargrilled. Available at Forodhani and waterfront restaurants at remarkably fair prices.

Pilau Rice — Spiced rice cooked with cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and cumin — reflecting the island's Arab and Indian influences. Served with meat or fish and a side of kachumbari salad.

Urojo (Zanzibar Mix) — A tangy soup with bhajias, shredded mango, coconut chutney, and chili — a complex mix of flavors reflecting Zanzibar's multicultural heritage. A beloved local snack.
