Top Places to Visit

Borobudur — A 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist monument with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues arranged across nine stacked platforms. Sunrise here, with mist swirling around the stupas, is transcendent.

Prambanan — A UNESCO masterpiece of 9th-century Hindu architecture with three main temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. The 47-metre Shiva temple is the tallest and most ornate.

Kraton (Sultan's Palace) — The heart of Yogyakarta — a walled city within a city where the Sultan still resides. Traditional Javanese architecture, gamelan music, and court dances are performed regularly.

Malioboro Street — A bustling pedestrian-friendly street lined with batik shops, street vendors, and warungs. By night, the lesehan (mat dining) stalls offer the most atmospheric street food experience.

Mount Merapi — The smoking, 2,930-metre volcano dominates the northern skyline. Join a pre-dawn jeep tour to the observation points or hike to the summit for views of the still-steaming crater.

Local Food

Gudeg — Yogyakarta's signature dish — young jackfruit slow-cooked in coconut milk and palm sugar until caramelised, served with rice, chicken, egg, tofu, and krecek (spiced buffalo skin).

Bakpia Pathok — Yogyakarta's favourite souvenir snack — small flaky pastries filled with sweet mung bean, chocolate, cheese, or taro. Buy them fresh from Pathok Street workshops.

Mie Ayam — Egg noodles tossed in sweet soy sauce and served with minced chicken, wontons, and a side of clear chicken broth. A cheap, satisfying warung staple.

Sate Klatak — Thick-cut goat satay grilled over coconut shell charcoal on iron spoke skewers. The smoky, fatty, intensely flavoured meat is a Yogyakarta speciality.
