Top Places to Visit

Terracotta Warriors — An army of 8,000 life-sized clay warriors, horses, and chariots guarding Emperor Qin Shi Huang's tomb, buried for over 2,200 years. Three excavation pits reveal an army frozen in formation — each face unique.

Xi'an City Wall — A magnificent 14-km Ming dynasty wall encircling the old city, 12 metres high and wide enough to cycle on top. The south gate is most impressive. Night illumination is spectacular.

Muslim Quarter — A labyrinth of narrow lanes around the Great Mosque, packed with halal food stalls, spice shops, and craft vendors. The Hui Muslim community has lived here since the Tang dynasty — try yangrou paomo and lamb skewers.

Great Mosque of Xi'an — One of the oldest and most significant mosques in China, built in 742 AD. Uniquely blending Chinese pagoda architecture with Islamic design — no dome or minaret, but courtyards with calligraphy and gardens.

Giant Wild Goose Pagoda — A seven-storey brick pagoda built in 652 AD to house Buddhist scriptures brought from India by the monk Xuanzang. The surrounding temple and musical fountain plaza are beautiful at sunset.

Local Food

Yangrou Paomo — Xi'an's most iconic dish — a hearty lamb soup where you personally tear flatbread into tiny pieces before the chef simmers them in rich mutton broth with noodles. The tearing ritual is part of the experience.

Biang Biang Noodles — Thick, hand-pulled belt noodles as wide as your palm, tossed with chilli oil, vinegar, and garlic. Named after the sound they make when slapped against the counter. Written with China's most complex character.

Lamb Skewers (Yang Rou Chuan) — Charcoal-grilled lamb seasoned with cumin, chilli flakes, and salt — the quintessential Muslim Quarter street food. Best eaten standing at a smoky stall with a cold beer.

Xi'an Dumpling Banquet — A famous multi-course meal of 18-20 different dumplings in various shapes and fillings — from walnut-shaped to flower-shaped. Several renowned restaurants specialise in this Xi'an tradition.
