Top Places to Visit

Pha That Luang — The most important national monument in Laos, this magnificent gold-covered Buddhist stupa dates to the 3rd century and is believed to enshrine a breastbone of the Buddha.

Patuxai — Vientiane's answer to the Arc de Triomphe, built with American-funded cement originally intended for a runway. Climb to the top for panoramic city views from the observation deck.

Wat Si Saket — Built in 1818, this is the oldest temple still standing in Vientiane, featuring over 6,800 Buddha images lining the cloister walls in a remarkable display of devotion.

Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan) — A bizarre and wonderful collection of over 200 Hindu and Buddhist concrete sculptures set in a riverside meadow 25 km south of the city, built by a mystic shaman in 1958.

Wat Ho Phra Keo — Once the royal temple of the Lao monarchy, this beautifully restored building now serves as a museum of religious art, including exquisite Lao and Khmer Buddha sculptures.

Local Food

Laap — The national dish of Laos — a spicy, herby salad of minced meat (usually pork, chicken, or duck) tossed with lime juice, fish sauce, ground rice, and fresh herbs. Eaten with sticky rice.

Sticky Rice (Khao Niao) — The cornerstone of every Lao meal, served in small woven bamboo baskets. Pinch a ball with your fingers and use it to scoop up other dishes — the authentic Lao way to eat.

Khao Piak Sen — A comforting Lao noodle soup with thick, hand-made tapioca-rice noodles in a rich chicken or pork broth. Often eaten for breakfast and flavored with fresh herbs and lime.

Khao Jee Pa-Tay — A crispy French baguette filled with Lao-style pate, pickled vegetables, chili sauce, and fresh herbs — a delicious legacy of French colonial influence fused with Lao flavors.
