St. Mark's Basilica — Venice's crown jewel, glittering with over 8,000 square meters of gold mosaics depicting biblical scenes. The Pala d'Oro altarpiece contains nearly 2,000 precious stones. Free entry to the basilica; small fees for the museum and Pala d'Oro.

Doge's Palace — The seat of Venetian political power for centuries, this pink-and-white marble palace houses lavish state rooms, Tintoretto's enormous Paradise painting, and the infamous Bridge of Sighs leading to the old prison cells.

Grand Canal — The 3.8 km S-shaped canal is lined with over 170 palaces spanning five centuries of architecture. Take vaporetto Line 1 for a slow glide past Ca' d'Oro, Rialto Bridge, and the Accademia.

Spaghetti al Nero di Seppia — Pasta tinted jet-black with cuttlefish ink, rich with garlic, white wine, and tender pieces of cuttlefish. A dramatic Venetian classic that stains your lips but rewards your palate.

Fritto Misto — A crispy platter of lightly battered and fried lagoon seafood \u2014 shrimp, calamari, soft-shell crabs, and small fish. Best eaten piping hot from a canal-side restaurant.

Fegato alla Veneziana — Thinly sliced calf's liver cooked slowly with sweet onions in butter and white wine. A signature Venetian dish that converts even liver skeptics with its meltingly tender texture.
