Diocletian's Palace — The astonishing 4th-century palace built by Emperor Diocletian now forms the living heart of Split. Wander the Peristyle courtyard, underground cellars, and narrow alleys where 3,000 people still live.

Cathedral of St Domnius — Originally Diocletian's mausoleum, converted to a cathedral in the 7th century. Climb the bell tower for spectacular views over Split's rooftops and the harbour.

Riva Promenade — The palm-lined waterfront promenade where all of Split comes to see and be seen. Cafes, bars, and benches face the harbour and the islands beyond. Best at sunset.

Marjan Hill — A forested hill with hiking trails, cliff-edge viewpoints, and secluded swimming spots. The summit offers panoramic views of Split, the islands, and the Dinaric Alps.

Bačvice Beach — Split's most popular beach, known for picigin — a local paddle-ball game played in the shallows. Sandy bottom, shallow waters, and a lively beach bar scene.

Local Food

Crni Rižot (Black Risotto) — An Adriatic classic — squid ink risotto with cuttlefish, turning the rice jet black. Rich, briny, and deeply flavourful. Best at konobas near the fish market.

Pašticada — Dalmatia's signature dish — beef slowly braised in a rich wine and prune sauce, served with homemade gnocchi (njoki). A celebration dish that takes days to prepare.

Ćevapi — Grilled minced meat sausages served in flatbread with raw onions and ajvar (roasted pepper relish). Quick, cheap, and available from street grills throughout the city.

Soparnik — A traditional Dalmatian flatbread filled with Swiss chard, onions, and olive oil. Protected as an intangible cultural heritage of Croatia. Simple and delicious.
