Top Places to Visit

Baščaršija — The 15th-century Ottoman bazaar quarter and soul of Sarajevo. Coppersmiths hammer in their workshops, coffee pots gleam in shop windows, and the scent of ćevapi fills the narrow lanes around the Sebilj fountain.

Sebilj Fountain — The beloved Ottoman-style wooden fountain in the centre of Pigeon Square, the symbolic heart of Sarajevo. Legend says that anyone who drinks from the Sebilj will return to the city.

Latin Bridge — The unassuming Ottoman stone bridge where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, triggering World War I. A small museum at the corner marks the exact spot of the fateful shot.

Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque — The finest Ottoman mosque in the Balkans, built in 1532. The elegant domed interior, peaceful courtyard, and adjacent clock tower represent the pinnacle of 16th-century Islamic architecture in the region.

Tunnel of Hope (Tunel spasa) — The 800-metre tunnel dug beneath the airport during the 1992-1996 siege that was Sarajevo's only connection to the outside world. Walk through the surviving section — a powerful, humbling experience.

Local Food

Ćevapi — Bosnia's beloved street food — small grilled minced-meat sausages served in warm somun bread with raw onions and kaymak (clotted cream). Baščaršija's ćevabdžinicas have served them for over a century.

Bosanski lonac — A traditional Bosnian pot — layers of meat and seasonal vegetables slow-cooked for hours in a sealed clay pot. Rich, tender, and deeply flavourful. Best in cooler months.

Burek & Pita — Flaky phyllo pastry spirals filled with meat (burek), cheese (sirnica), spinach (zeljanica), or potato (krompiruša). Best eaten fresh from a buregdžinica with a cup of yogurt.

Tufahija — Poached apple stuffed with walnut filling, served in sugar syrup and topped with whipped cream. A traditional Bosnian dessert that perfectly captures the Ottoman culinary influence.
