Top Places to Visit

Mercado Central — A labyrinthine indoor market that has been the beating heart of San Jose since 1880. Narrow aisles overflow with tropical fruit, fresh seafood, herbs, coffee vendors, and tiny sodas serving the best casados in the city.

Teatro Nacional — An ornate neoclassical theatre built in 1897 with the profits of the coffee trade. The Italian-designed interior features marble, gold leaf, and painted ceilings. Guided tours and evening performances are available.

Museo del Oro Precolombino — An underground museum beneath the Plaza de la Cultura displaying over 1,600 pieces of pre-Columbian gold artifacts, including pendants, figurines, and ceremonial objects made by indigenous peoples between 500 BC and 1500 AD.

Museo Nacional de Costa Rica — Housed in the former Bellavista Fortress (still pockmarked with bullet holes from the 1948 civil war), this museum covers Costa Rica's natural and cultural history from pre-Columbian times through the abolition of the army.

Barrio Escalante — The most exciting food neighbourhood in Central America, packed with craft breweries, third-wave coffee shops, fusion restaurants, and street art. The gastronomic scene has exploded here since 2015.

Local Food

Casado — The quintessential Costa Rican lunch — a plate of rice, black beans, salad, fried plantains, and your choice of meat (chicken, fish, pork, or beef). The name means 'married' — everything on one plate. Found at every soda for 3,000-5,000 CRC.

Gallo Pinto — Costa Rica's beloved breakfast — rice and black beans sautéed with Lizano sauce, onion, and red pepper. Served with eggs, sour cream, plantains, and fresh tortillas. The name means 'spotted rooster'.

Chifrijo — A bar snack that became a national obsession — crispy chicharrones (fried pork) and beans topped with pico de gallo, avocado, and tortilla chips. Invented in a San Jose bar in the 1990s. Addictively good.

Tres Leches — A moist sponge cake soaked in three milks — evaporated, condensed, and cream — topped with whipped cream. Light, sweet, and impossibly creamy. Costa Rica's favourite celebration cake.
