Top Places to Visit

Golden Gate Bridge — The 2.7-km Art Deco suspension bridge spans the Golden Gate strait in its signature International Orange. Walk or bike across for stunning views of the bay, Alcatraz, and the city skyline. Best on clear mornings.

Alcatraz Island — The former federal penitentiary that held Al Capone and the Birdman. The award-winning audio tour narrated by former guards and inmates is gripping. Book ferry tickets 2-3 weeks ahead — they sell out.

Fisherman's Wharf — The bustling waterfront district with Pier 39's barking sea lions, fresh Dungeness crab, Boudin sourdough bread bowls, and views of the bay. Touristy but undeniably fun. Musée Mécanique's antique arcade is a hidden gem.

Chinatown — Enter through the Dragon's Gate on Grant Avenue into a 24-block neighbourhood of tea shops, dim sum parlours, herbalists, temples, and back alleys. Established in 1848, it's the densest and most vibrant Chinatown outside Asia.

Cable Cars — The world's last manually operated cable car system, running since 1873. Three lines climb SF's steepest hills. The Powell-Hyde line offers the best views. Queue at the Powell & Market turnaround or hop on mid-route.

Local Food

Mission Burrito — A San Francisco invention: a massive flour tortilla wrapped around rice, beans, meat, salsa, guacamole, and sour cream. La Taqueria, El Farolito, and Taqueria Cancun are the holy trinity. No rice debate optional.

Dungeness Crab & Clam Chowder — Fresh Dungeness crab in season (Nov-Jun) served cracked with butter, or as a crab Louis salad. Sourdough bread bowl clam chowder at Fisherman's Wharf is a San Francisco rite of passage.

Dim Sum in Chinatown — Steaming carts of har gow, siu mai, char siu bao, and congee in bustling dining rooms. Hang Ah Tea Room (1920) claims to be the oldest dim sum restaurant in the US. City View is excellent.

Sourdough Bread — San Francisco's signature bread, tangy and crusty, perfected by Boudin Bakery since 1849. The wild yeast and bacteria unique to SF's climate give it a flavour impossible to replicate anywhere else.
