Top Places to Visit

Registan Square — Three monumental madrasas — Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor, and Tilya-Kori — facing each other across a vast plaza. The turquoise tilework, soaring portals, and geometric perfection are breathtaking at any hour.

Shah-i-Zinda — A stunning necropolis of over 20 mausoleums climbing a hillside, adorned with the finest tilework in Central Asia. Each tomb is a masterwork of turquoise, cobalt, and gold majolica spanning the 11th to 19th centuries.

Bibi-Khanym Mosque — Built by Tamerlane to be the largest mosque in the Islamic world after his Indian campaign. Though partially ruined and rebuilt, its sheer scale and soaring portal remain awe-inspiring.

Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum — The final resting place of Amir Timur (Tamerlane), with a fluted turquoise dome and richly gilded interior. The jade tombstone inside is one of the largest in the world.

Siab Bazaar — A bustling traditional bazaar next to Bibi-Khanym Mosque, famous for its enormous Samarkand non bread, dried fruits, nuts, and colourful spices piled in pyramids.

Local Food

Samarkand Plov — Samarkand's plov is distinct — cooked in layers rather than mixed, with yellow carrots, chickpeas, and tender lamb. Served on enormous communal platters, it is richer and more ceremonial than Tashkent's version.

Samarkand Non — The most famous bread in Uzbekistan — large, round, golden, and stamped with intricate patterns. Travellers have carried Samarkand non across continents. Buy it fresh at Siab Bazaar.

Samsa — Flaky pastry filled with spiced lamb and onion, baked in a tandoor oven until golden and crispy. Samarkand's samsa are considered the best in Uzbekistan — buy them hot from bazaar stalls.

Halva & Dried Fruits — Samarkand is famous for its halva — dense, crumbly confections made from sesame, nuts, and sugar. The dried fruits (apricots, raisins, figs) at Siab Bazaar are legendary across Central Asia.
