Pelourinho — A UNESCO World Heritage district of pastel-coloured colonial buildings, baroque churches, cobblestone squares, and live music every night. The cultural heart of Afro-Brazil.

Elevador Lacerda — A 72-metre art deco elevator connecting the upper (Cidade Alta) and lower (Cidade Baixa) parts of Salvador. Built in 1873, it carries 900,000 passengers monthly and offers bay views.

Igreja do Bonfim — The iconic church famous for the colourful fita (ribbon) bracelets tied to its gates with wishes. The Lavagem do Bonfim festival in January draws massive crowds of devotees.

Farol da Barra (Barra Lighthouse) — A 16th-century fort housing the Nautical Museum and a lighthouse at the tip of the Barra peninsula. The sunset from here — watching the sun sink into the Atlantic — is legendary.

Mercado Modelo — A 19th-century customs house converted into Salvador's main handicraft market. Buy berimbaus (capoeira instruments), Bahian lace, wooden carvings, and cashew nuts.

Local Food

Acarajé — Deep-fried black-eyed pea fritters split open and stuffed with vatapá (shrimp paste), caruru (okra), dried shrimp, and pepper sauce. Sold by Bahian women in traditional white dress — a UNESCO cultural heritage.

Moqueca Baiana — A rich, aromatic fish stew with coconut milk, dendê (palm oil), peppers, tomatoes, and cilantro, served bubbling in a traditional clay pot with rice and pirão (fish porridge).

Vatapá — A creamy, spiced paste of bread, coconut milk, ground peanuts, palm oil, and shrimp. Served as a side dish or stuffed into acarajé. One of Bahia's most distinctive flavours.

Bobó de Camarão — Shrimp cooked in a velvety sauce of cassava purée, coconut milk, and palm oil. Rich, creamy, and distinctly Bahian — served with rice.
