Livraria Lello — A neo-Gothic bookshop from 1906 with a stunning crimson staircase, stained-glass ceiling, and carved wood details. Said to have inspired J.K. Rowling. Buy a book to redeem the entry fee.

Ribeira District — Porto's UNESCO-listed medieval heart tumbles down to the Douro in a maze of narrow alleys, tiled houses, and cafe-lined squares. The Cais da Ribeira promenade is unforgettable at sunset.

Dom Luis I Bridge — An Eiffel-school masterpiece connecting Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia. Walk the upper deck for vertiginous views 45 metres above the Douro. The lower deck reaches the Ribeira.

Clerigos Tower — Climb 240 steps up this 75-metre Baroque bell tower for the best 360-degree view of Porto's rooftops, river, and ocean. The attached church is a masterpiece of Portuguese Baroque.

Sao Bento Station — A working railway station adorned with 20,000 azulejo tiles depicting Portuguese history. The main hall is essentially a free gallery — one of Porto's most photographed interiors.

Local Food

Francesinha — Porto's legendary sandwich: layers of cured ham, sausage, and steak between bread, covered in melted cheese and drenched in a spicy beer-tomato sauce. Served with fries. Unmissable.

Bacalhau a Gomes de Sa — Salt cod layered with potatoes, onions, olives, and hard-boiled eggs, baked until golden. One of 365 Portuguese bacalhau recipes, and Porto's signature version.

Bifana — A simple, perfect pork sandwich: thin marinated pork steak in a crusty bread roll with mustard. Often served with a cold Super Bock beer at the counter.

Pastel de Nata — Crispy, flaky pastry filled with custard, charred on top and dusted with cinnamon. Eaten warm from the oven at any pastelaria in Porto, any time of day.
