Panama Canal (Miraflores Locks) — Watch massive cargo ships and cruise liners transit through the lock system that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The visitor centre has four floors of exhibits, a theatre, and an observation deck. Seeing a Panamax ship squeeze through the locks is mesmerising.

Casco Viejo — Panama City's beautifully restored colonial district on a peninsula jutting into the Pacific. Narrow streets of Spanish, French, and American architecture, rooftop bars with skyline views, and crumbling churches alongside boutique hotels.

BioMuseo — Frank Gehry's first Latin American building — a riot of bold colours and angular forms telling the story of how Panama's isthmus rose from the sea and changed the world's biodiversity. Interactive exhibits are excellent.

Cinta Costera — A 7-km waterfront path connecting Casco Viejo to Punta Pacifica, with views of the modern skyline on one side and the Pacific on the other. Popular for jogging, cycling, and sunset walks along the bay.

Parque Natural Metropolitano — A 265-hectare tropical rainforest within the city limits — the only protected forest inside a Latin American capital. Hiking trails lead to a mirador with panoramic views of the city, Canal, and forest canopy.

Local Food

Ceviche — Panama's obsession — raw corvina (sea bass) cured in lime with onion, cilantro, and ají chombo pepper. Served at the Mercado de Mariscos and every street corner ceviche stand. The corvina is caught fresh daily from the Pacific.

Sancocho — Panama's national comfort food — a hearty chicken soup with ñame root, corn, cilantro (culantro), and oregano. Every Panamanian grandmother has her version. Best after a night out or on a rainy afternoon.

Empanadas — Corn dough turnovers stuffed with seasoned ground beef, chicken, or cheese and deep-fried until golden. Available at street stalls across the city for 0.50-1 USD each. Best with a drizzle of hot sauce.

Arroz con Pollo — Panama's everyday staple — chicken and rice cooked together with sofrito, vegetables, and achote for colour. Simple, satisfying, and found at every fonda in the city. Often served with fried plantains.
