Osaka Castle — Originally built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583, the reconstructed castle houses a museum of Osaka's history. The surrounding park is spectacular during cherry blossom season. Climb to the 8th floor for panoramic city views.

Dotonbori — Osaka's most famous street — a canal-side strip of giant neon signs (the Glico Running Man, the mechanical crab), street food stalls, and restaurants. This is where 'kuidaore' (eating until you drop) was invented.

Shinsekai — A wonderfully retro district built in 1912 and modelled after New York and Paris. The Tsutenkaku Tower dominates the skyline. Famous for kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) and a pleasantly rough-around-the-edges atmosphere.

Universal Studios Japan — One of only four Universal Studios parks worldwide, featuring the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Super Nintendo World (Mario), and Hollywood-quality rides. Book Express Pass for shorter queues.

Kuromon Market — A 600-metre covered market with over 150 stalls selling the freshest seafood, Wagyu beef, exotic fruits, and street food. Try tuna sashimi, grilled king crab legs, and fresh uni (sea urchin) on the spot.

Local Food

Takoyaki (Octopus Balls) — Crispy-on-the-outside, creamy-on-the-inside balls of batter with chunks of octopus, topped with sauce, mayo, bonito flakes, and nori. Invented in Osaka in 1935. Street stalls on every corner.

Okonomiyaki — A savoury cabbage pancake loaded with meat, seafood, or cheese, grilled on a teppan and topped with sauce, mayo, bonito flakes, and pickled ginger. The name means 'grilled as you like it'.

Kushikatsu (Deep-Fried Skewers) — Skewered meat, seafood, and vegetables coated in panko and deep-fried. Dip in the communal sauce pot (but only once — double dipping is strictly forbidden). Shinsekai is kushikatsu central.

Osaka Ramen — While not as famous as Kyushu tonkotsu, Osaka's ramen scene is thriving. Try the rich pork broth at local chains, or visit the Cup Noodles Museum in Ikeda to learn about instant ramen's Osaka origins.
