Kasuga Taisha — A vibrant vermillion Shinto shrine founded in 768 AD, famous for its thousands of bronze and stone lanterns lining the approach. Twice a year, all 3,000 lanterns are lit during the Mantoro festival.

Local Food

Kakinoha Zushi (Persimmon Leaf Sushi) — Nara's signature dish — vinegared rice topped with cured mackerel or salmon, wrapped in fragrant persimmon leaves. Originally a preservation method, now a refined delicacy sold at shops throughout the city.

Mochi & Dango — Nara is famous for its mochi rice cakes. Nakatanidou near the station pounds fresh yomogi (mugwort) mochi with theatrical speed. Mitarashi dango (grilled rice dumplings in sweet soy glaze) are perfect park snacks.

Miwa Somen — Delicate thin wheat noodles from nearby Miwa village, served cold with a dipping sauce in summer or warm in broth in winter. The finest somen in Japan, with a history stretching back 1,300 years.

Chagayu (Tea Porridge) — A simple, comforting rice porridge cooked in roasted tea — a Nara breakfast tradition for centuries. Served at traditional restaurants with pickles and small side dishes.
