Gateway of India — Built in 1924 to commemorate King George V's visit, this basalt arch on the waterfront is Mumbai's most recognisable landmark. The last British troops left India through this gate in 1948. Take a ferry to Elephanta from here.

Marine Drive — A sweeping 3.6 km Art Deco promenade curving along the Arabian Sea. At night, the streetlights form a 'necklace' of light. Join locals at sunset sitting on the sea wall — Mumbai's living room.

Dharavi — Home to over a million people and generating $1 billion annually, Dharavi is a city within a city with its own industries, schools, and community. Respectful guided tours offer insight into resilience and enterprise.

Elephanta Caves — A UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hindu cave temples carved from basalt rock on an island in Mumbai Harbour. The massive Trimurti Shiva sculpture (6 metres) is one of India's greatest works of art.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus — A UNESCO-listed masterpiece of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture and still one of India's busiest railway stations. The ornate facade, stained glass, and turrets are best appreciated at night when illuminated.

Local Food

Vada Pav — Mumbai's unofficial food symbol — a spiced potato fritter (vada) in a soft bread roll (pav) with chutneys. Costing just 15-30 INR, it's the original Indian burger. Try Ashok Vada Pav in Kirti College.

Pav Bhaji — A buttery spiced vegetable mash served with toasted bread rolls. Juhu Beach stalls serve it late into the night with mountains of butter. A Mumbai invention that conquered India.

Bombay Duck (Bombil Fry) — Despite the name, it is a fish — dried or fresh bombil, battered, and fried until crispy. A coastal Mumbai speciality best enjoyed at local seafood restaurants in Colaba or Mahim.

Bhel Puri — Puffed rice mixed with sev, onions, tomatoes, chutneys, and a squeeze of lime — a crunchy, tangy, sweet-spicy Mumbai beach snack. Every chaat vendor has their own secret formula.
