Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) — The largest mosque in the world, capable of hosting over 2 million worshippers. The Grand Mosque surrounds the Kaaba and is the focal point of Hajj and Umrah. The expansion has added modern towers and air-conditioned prayer halls.

The Kaaba — The black cube-shaped structure at the centre of the Grand Mosque, believed to have been built by Abraham and Ishmael. Muslims worldwide face the Kaaba during prayer. Tawaf (circumambulation) is performed seven times counter-clockwise.

Mount Arafat — The granite hill 20 km southeast of Mecca where the Prophet Muhammad delivered his Farewell Sermon. Standing at Arafat on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah is the most important ritual of the Hajj pilgrimage.

Mina — A vast tent city that houses millions of pilgrims during Hajj. The Stoning of the Devil ritual takes place at the three Jamarat pillars here. Outside Hajj season, the enormous tent infrastructure stands empty.

Jabal al-Nour — The mountain containing the Cave of Hira, where the Prophet Muhammad received the first revelation of the Quran. The steep 600-metre climb takes 1-2 hours but rewards with profound spiritual significance.

Local Food

Kabsa — Saudi Arabia's national dish — fragrant basmati rice cooked with spices, tomatoes, and slow-cooked lamb or chicken. Served on large communal platters and eaten with the right hand.

Shawarma & Falafel — Available on nearly every street, freshly carved shawarma meat wrapped in flatbread and crispy falafel sandwiches are quick, affordable staples for pilgrims between prayers.

Ful Medames — A hearty breakfast of slow-cooked fava beans dressed with olive oil, lemon, and cumin, served with fresh bread. A protein-rich start to long days of worship and walking.

Mandi — Tender meat (usually lamb or chicken) slow-cooked in a tandoor oven and served over saffron-spiced rice. The meat falls off the bone and the rice absorbs the smoky flavours.
