Lake Maracaibo — A vast body of water connecting to the Caribbean via a narrow strait, crossed by the iconic 8.7 km General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge. Sunset views over the lake are spectacular.

Bas\u00edlica de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Chiquinquir\u00e1 — Known as 'La Chinita', this is Zulia's most important church dedicated to the Virgin of Chiquinquir\u00e1. The annual festivities in November are the region's biggest celebration.

Calle Carabobo — A restored colonial street with brightly painted facades, craft shops, galleries, and restaurants. The heart of Maracaibo's historic centre and perfect for a walking tour.

Catatumbo Lightning — At the mouth of the Catatumbo River, lightning strikes up to 280 times per hour for 10 hours nightly, 140\u2013160 nights per year. Visible from across the lake. Multi-day tours depart from Maracaibo.

Puente General Rafael Urdaneta — An 8.7 km bridge spanning the narrow outlet of Lake Maracaibo, one of the longest bridges in South America. An engineering landmark and symbol of the city.

Local Food

Pat\u00e1con Zulia\u00f1o — A massive sandwich using fried green plantain slices instead of bread, stuffed with beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and sauces. Maracaibo's signature street food.

Cazuela de Mariscos — A rich seafood stew with shrimp, fish, and shellfish in a coconut-tomato sauce. Lake Maracaibo and the Caribbean coast provide abundant fresh seafood.

Tumbarrancho — A fried arepa sliced open and stuffed with mortadella, cheese, and a variety of toppings. A fast-food favourite unique to Maracaibo.

Mandoca — A slightly sweet, ring-shaped fried dough made with cornmeal, plantain, and panela (raw sugar). Often eaten for breakfast with butter and cheese. Uniquely zuliano.
