Top Places to Visit

Male Fish Market — A bustling waterfront market where fishermen unload fresh tuna, reef fish, and octopus each morning. The adjacent local market sells tropical fruits, betel nuts, and handicrafts. The real pulse of Mal\u00E9.

Hukuru Miskiy (Friday Mosque) — The oldest mosque in the Maldives, built in 1658 from intricately carved coral stone. The interior is adorned with lacquerwork and calligraphy. A UNESCO-tentative-listed masterpiece of Maldivian craftsmanship.

Islamic Centre & Grand Friday Mosque — The Maldives' largest mosque, with a striking golden dome visible across the city. The Islamic Centre houses a library, conference hall, and the mosque which can hold 5,000 worshippers.

National Museum — Housed in a modern building within the former Sultan's Palace gardens, displaying pre-Islamic coral carvings, royal lacquerware, ceremonial robes, and artefacts tracing the Maldives' Buddhist and Islamic heritage.

Sultan Park — The last remaining section of the former Royal Palace grounds, now a peaceful public garden. Tropical trees, walking paths, and benches offer a green respite from the dense city streets.

Local Food

Garudhiya (Fish Soup) — The quintessential Maldivian dish — a clear, fragrant tuna broth served with rice, lime, chilli, and onion. Simple, sustaining, and eaten daily across the islands. Best at a local hotaa restaurant.

Hedhikaa (Short Eats) — An array of deep-fried and baked snacks served at tea time — gulha (fish pastry balls), bajiya (samosa-like pastries), keemia (fish rolls), and masroshi (stuffed flatbread). Best at a local cafe.

Mas Huni & Roshi — Shredded smoked tuna mixed with grated coconut, onion, chilli, and lime, served with roshi (flatbread). The traditional Maldivian breakfast — simple, fresh, and deeply satisfying.

Maldivian Fish Curry — Tuna, reef fish, or octopus simmered in a rich coconut curry with curry leaves, pandan, and Maldive fish paste. Served with steamed rice and chilli sambol. Flavourful and aromatic.
