Valley of the Kings — The burial ground of Egypt's New Kingdom pharaohs for nearly 500 years. Over 60 tombs including Tutankhamun's have been discovered. The painted chambers of Seti I and Ramesses VI are among humanity's greatest artistic achievements.

Karnak Temple Complex — A vast complex of sanctuaries, pylons, and obelisks built over 2,000 years. The Great Hypostyle Hall with its 134 massive columns is one of the most awe-inspiring spaces ever built. The Sound and Light show at night is unforgettable.

Luxor Temple — A magnificent temple in the heart of modern Luxor, connected to Karnak by the Avenue of Sphinxes. Begun by Amenhotep III and expanded by Ramesses II, it is spectacularly illuminated at night.

Hatshepsut Temple (Deir el-Bahari) — Queen Hatshepsut's stunning mortuary temple rises in three terraced colonnades against dramatic desert cliffs. One of Egypt's most photogenic monuments, best visited early morning.

Colossi of Memnon — Two enormous 18-metre stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III that once guarded his mortuary temple. They stand alone in the fields — a striking and free-to-visit introduction to the West Bank.

Local Food

Koshari — Egypt's beloved street food — a carb-loaded bowl of rice, lentils, macaroni, and chickpeas topped with spiced tomato sauce, fried onions, and garlic vinegar. Filling, cheap, and delicious.

Ful Medames — Slow-cooked fava beans seasoned with cumin, lemon, olive oil, and garlic — Egypt's breakfast staple for thousands of years. Served with baladi bread and pickled vegetables.

Kebab & Kofta — Grilled lamb kebabs and spiced minced meat kofta — the centerpiece of an Egyptian feast. Served with rice, tahini, salads, and warm pita bread at open-air restaurants along the Corniche.

Pigeon (Hamam) — Stuffed roasted pigeon filled with freekeh (smoked green wheat) — a Upper Egyptian specialty and a Luxor signature dish. Rich, gamey, and traditionally eaten by hand.
