Royal Palace Museum — The elegant 1904 palace where Lao kings once lived, now housing the sacred Phra Bang Buddha image, royal regalia, diplomatic gifts, and a glimpse into Laos' regal past.

Kuang Si Falls — A spectacular multi-tiered waterfall with milky turquoise pools perfect for swimming. The bear rescue centre at the base shelters Asiatic black bears saved from poaching.

Alms Giving Ceremony — Each dawn, hundreds of saffron-robed monks silently walk through the streets collecting sticky rice from kneeling devotees. A deeply spiritual tradition dating back centuries.

Pak Ou Caves — Two riverside caves crammed with thousands of weathered Buddha statues left by pilgrims over centuries. The two-hour longboat ride up the Mekong to reach them is half the experience.

Wat Xieng Thong — The city's most magnificent temple with sweeping curved roofs, intricate mosaics, a rare tree-of-life glass mosaic on the rear wall, and the ornate royal funeral carriage chapel.

Local Food

Sticky Rice (Khao Niew) — The foundation of every Lao meal — glutinous rice eaten by hand from a small bamboo basket (tip khao). Pinch a ball, dip it in jaew (chilli paste), and pair with any dish.

Laap — Laos' national dish — a minced meat salad (duck, pork, fish, or chicken) tossed with lime juice, fish sauce, roasted rice powder, mint, and fiery chillies.

Khao Piak Sen — Comforting hand-rolled rice noodle soup in a rich, thick chicken broth — Luang Prabang's favourite breakfast. Often served with fresh herbs, lime, and chilli flakes.

Grilled Mekong Fish — Whole fish from the Mekong, stuffed with lemongrass and herbs, grilled over charcoal, and served with jaew bong (spicy buffalo-skin chilli dip). Best at the evening food stalls.
