Belém Tower — A 16th-century limestone tower on the Tagus River, built to guard Lisbon's harbour during the Age of Discovery. UNESCO World Heritage site with intricate Manueline carvings and river views.

Jerónimos Monastery — A sprawling 16th-century monastery celebrating Vasco da Gama's voyage to India. The ornate cloisters are among the finest in Europe. UNESCO World Heritage site.

Alfama — A labyrinth of narrow alleys, tiled facades, and hidden fado houses climbing from the waterfront to São Jorge Castle. The soul of Lisbon, best explored by getting lost.

São Jorge Castle — An 11th-century Moorish castle crowning Lisbon's highest hill, with sweeping views across the city, river, and bridge. The ramparts and archaeological site are worth the steep climb.

Praça do Comércio — Lisbon's magnificent main square, opening onto the Tagus River. Once the site of the Royal Palace, it's framed by elegant arcaded buildings painted in imperial yellow.

Local Food

Pastel de Nata — Lisbon's iconic custard tart: flaky puff pastry filled with creamy egg custard, blistered on top. Best from Pastéis de Belém (the original) or Manteigaria. Dust with cinnamon.

Bacalhau (Salt Cod) — Portugal's national ingredient, prepared in supposedly 365 different ways. Try bacalhau à Brás (shredded with eggs and potatoes) or bacalhau com natas (baked with cream).

Bifana — A simple, perfect pork sandwich: thin slices of marinated pork in a crusty bread roll, often with mustard. Lisbon's favourite street food, best from a tasca (tavern).

Grilled Sardines — The symbol of Lisbon's June festivals (Santos Populares). Whole sardines charcoal-grilled and served on bread to soak up the juices. Best eaten outdoors in Alfama.
