Top Places to Visit

Kotor Old Town — A perfectly preserved medieval walled town entered through grand stone gates. Inside, a maze of narrow stone alleys reveals Romanesque churches, Venetian palaces, cosy squares, and the famous Kotor cats.

San Giovanni Fortress — A gruelling but spectacular climb up 1,350 steps of ancient fortification walls to the castle ruins at 280 metres. The panoramic views over the Bay of Kotor and red rooftops below are unforgettable.

Cathedral of Saint Tryphon — Kotor's most important building, a 12th-century Romanesque cathedral with twin bell towers. Inside, magnificent 14th-century frescoes and a treasury of gold and silver reliquaries.

Our Lady of the Rocks — A tiny man-made island near Perast topped with a picturesque 15th-century church. According to legend, local sailors dropped stones here for centuries to build the island. Reached by boat from Perast.

Perast — A dreamy one-street Baroque village on the bay with 16 churches and 17 palazzi, once a wealthy maritime settlement under Venice. The most photogenic village on the entire bay.

Local Food

Fresh Adriatic Seafood — The Bay of Kotor offers outstanding seafood — grilled sea bass, octopus salad, black risotto with cuttlefish ink, and shrimp buzara (cooked in wine, garlic, and tomato). Best enjoyed waterside.

Njeguški steak — A pork or veal steak stuffed with Njeguški pršut (smoked ham) and Njeguški cheese, then grilled or pan-fried. Named after the village on Mount Lovćen, this is Montenegro's most beloved dish.

Njeguški pršut — Montenegro's famous dry-cured, cold-smoked ham from the village of Njeguši on Mount Lovćen. The mountain air and beechwood smoke give it a distinctive flavour. Try it with local cheese and olives.

Burek — Flaky phyllo pastry filled with cheese (sirnica), meat, or spinach (zeljanica). A Balkan staple found at every bakery. Best eaten fresh from the oven for breakfast with yogurt.
