Top Places to Visit

Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) — One of the oldest and holiest Buddhist sites in Nepal. The iconic white dome topped with Buddha's all-seeing eyes surveys the valley from a hilltop swarming with monkeys and prayer flags.

Boudhanath Stupa — One of the largest spherical stupas in the world, surrounded by a ring of monasteries and shops. Walk the kora (circumambulation) at dusk as monks chant and butter lamps flicker.

Kathmandu Durbar Square — A UNESCO World Heritage square lined with intricately carved temples, palaces, and courtyards dating to the Malla kingdom. The Kumari Ghar houses Nepal's living goddess.

Pashupatinath Temple — A sacred Shiva temple complex on the Bagmati River where Hindu cremation ceremonies take place openly on the ghats. The main pagoda is limited to Hindus, but the grounds are open to all.

Patan Durbar Square — Perhaps the most beautiful of the Kathmandu Valley's three durbar squares, with the stunning Krishna Mandir, the Golden Temple, and the Patan Museum of Newari art and bronzes.

Local Food

Dal Bhat — Nepal's national meal eaten twice daily — steamed rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry, pickle (achar), and often meat curry. Refills are unlimited. 'Dal bhat power, 24 hour!' say the locals.

Momos — Tibetan-style steamed or fried dumplings stuffed with buffalo meat, chicken, or vegetables, served with fiery tomato-sesame chutney. Found on every street corner.

Newari Khaja Set — A traditional Newari feast plate with beaten rice (chiura), marinated meat, black-eyed beans, pickled vegetables, fried soybeans, and egg — eaten with the hands.

Chatamari — Often called 'Nepali pizza' — a crispy rice-flour crepe topped with minced meat, egg, vegetables, and spices. A Newari speciality best found in Patan and Bhaktapur.
