Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — This magnificent temple complex houses a tooth of the Buddha, Sri Lanka's most venerated relic. The evening puja ceremony, with drummers and chanting, is a profoundly moving experience.

Kandy Lake — A serene lake created by the last Kandyan king in 1807, encircled by a tree-lined promenade. Morning walks, evening strolls, and views of the temple and surrounding hills make it Kandy's centrepiece.

Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya — A stunning 60-hectare botanical garden with giant bamboo groves, a magnificent avenue of royal palms, orchid houses, and specimen trees from around the world. One of the finest tropical gardens on earth.

Local Food

Rice & Curry — Sri Lanka's staple meal — a mound of rice surrounded by small bowls of different curries: dhal, chicken, fish, vegetable, coconut sambol, and pickles. Each meal is a symphony of flavours, textures, and spice levels.

Kottu Roti — Chopped roti bread stir-fried on a hot griddle with vegetables, egg, and chicken or mutton, seasoned with spices. The rhythmic chopping sound of the kottu maker's blades is the soundtrack of Sri Lankan street food.

String Hoppers & Hoppers — String hoppers are delicate nests of steamed rice noodles. Hoppers are crispy bowl-shaped rice pancakes — the egg hopper with a fried egg in the centre is iconic. Both served with curry and sambol.

Sambol & Short Eats — Pol sambol (coconut relish with chilli) accompanies every meal. 'Short eats' — small pastries, rolls, and patties filled with fish, vegetables, or meat — are sold at bakeries and tea shops everywhere.
