Top Places to Visit

Nordkette — Take the Hungerburgbahn funicular and cable car from the city centre to 2,334 metres in 20 minutes. Jaw-dropping views of the Inn Valley, Stubai Alps, and into Bavaria.

Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) — Innsbruck's iconic landmark: a late-Gothic oriel window with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles, built for Emperor Maximilian I in 1500 to watch tournaments below.

Imperial Palace (Hofburg) — A grand Baroque and Rococo palace with lavish state rooms, the Giant Hall with ceiling frescoes, and the Imperial Apartments. One of Austria's three most important palaces.

Bergisel Ski Jump — The Zaha Hadid-designed ski jump from the 2002 Olympics. Take the lift to the viewing platform for panoramic city views and watch ski jumpers train.

Ambras Castle — A stunning Renaissance castle set in beautiful gardens, housing the Habsburg portrait gallery and a unique Chamber of Art and Curiosities dating from the 16th century.

Tiroler Gröstl — A hearty pan-fried hash of sliced potatoes, beef or pork, and onions topped with a fried egg. The quintessential Tyrolean comfort dish, served in every traditional Gasthaus.

Speckknödel — Large bread dumplings studded with smoky Tyrolean speck (cured ham), served in a clear broth or with sauerkraut. A mountain hut classic.

Käsespätzle — Tyrolean egg noodles (Spätzle) layered with melted mountain cheese and topped with crispy fried onions. Austria's answer to mac and cheese.

Kaiserschmarrn — Shredded fluffy pancake caramelised in butter, dusted with icing sugar, and served with plum compote. Named after Emperor Franz Joseph I.
