Top Places to Visit

Waikiki Beach — A 3.2-km crescent of golden sand backed by high-rise hotels and the profile of Diamond Head. The birthplace of modern surfing — take a surfing lesson where Duke Kahanamoku rode waves a century ago. Warm, calm waters year-round.

Diamond Head — A 1.3-km trail climbs through a 300,000-year-old volcanic crater to a 232-metre summit with panoramic views of Waikiki, Honolulu, and the Pacific. Allow 1.5-2 hours. Go early to avoid heat and crowds. Reservations required.

Pearl Harbor National Memorial — The USS Arizona Memorial straddles the sunken battleship where 1,177 crew members rest. Free timed tickets (reserve online). The Battleship Missouri, submarine USS Bowfin, and aviation museum complete the experience.

North Shore — Home to the Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Waimea Bay — the world's most famous surf breaks. Winter waves reach 10+ metres. In summer, calm waters are perfect for snorkelling. Haleiwa town has shrimp trucks and surf culture.

Hanauma Bay — A marine life conservation area in a collapsed volcanic crater with crystal-clear water and hundreds of tropical fish species. Reservations required. Watch the orientation video. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Local Food

Poke Bowl — Cubes of fresh raw ahi tuna (or salmon) marinated in soy sauce, sesame oil, green onions, and seaweed, served over rice. Hawaii's signature dish — every supermarket, food truck, and restaurant has its own version.

Plate Lunch — Two scoops of rice, macaroni salad, and a protein (kalua pig, teriyaki chicken, or loco moco) — the quintessential Hawaii working lunch. Rainbow Drive-In near Waikiki has served it since 1961.

Spam Musubi — A slice of grilled Spam on a block of rice wrapped in nori seaweed — Hawaii's beloved snack. Hawaii consumes more Spam than any other US state. Found at every convenience store and gas station.

Shave Ice — Finely shaved ice drenched in tropical fruit syrups — far more refined than a snow cone. Get it with azuki beans, condensed milk, mochi balls, or ice cream on the bottom. Matsumoto's on the North Shore is legendary.
