Palace of Knossos — The legendary Bronze Age palace of King Minos, partially reconstructed by Sir Arthur Evans. Throne room, grand staircase, and vivid frescoes of dolphins and bull-leapers.

Heraklion Archaeological Museum — One of Europe's great museums, housing the Phaistos Disc, Snake Goddess figurines, and original Knossos frescoes. Essential before or after visiting the palace.

Venetian Harbour & Koules Fortress — The imposing Venetian fortress guards the old harbour where fishing boats bob below the ramparts. Climb the battlements for sweeping views across the harbour and city.

Lions Square (Plateia Venizelou) — The social heart of Heraklion, centred on the elegant 17th-century Morosini Fountain with its four carved lions. Surrounded by cafes and the start of the market street.

1866 Street Market — A bustling open-air market running the length of 1866 Street, packed with Cretan herbs, honey, olive oil, cheese, leather goods, and souvenirs.

Local Food

Dakos — A Cretan bruschetta: barley rusk soaked in olive oil and topped with chopped tomatoes, crumbled mizithra cheese, capers, and oregano. Simple and addictive.

Lamb with Stamnagathi — Slow-cooked Cretan lamb paired with wild stamnagathi greens, dressed in lemon and local olive oil. A taste of the mountain villages.

Bougatsa — Flaky phyllo pastry filled with sweet custard cream, dusted with icing sugar and cinnamon. Heraklion's signature breakfast treat — best from shops near Lions Square.

Grilled Octopus — Sun-dried and chargrilled octopus drizzled with Cretan olive oil and vinegar. Found at harbour-side tavernas where the catch of the day hangs outside.
