Old Havana (Habana Vieja) — A living museum of baroque and neoclassical architecture spanning five centuries. Cobblestone streets wind past grand plazas, restored palaces, and atmospheric bars where Hemingway once drank. The entire district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Malecón — The 8-km seawall promenade is Havana's living room — where lovers embrace, fishermen cast lines, musicians play, and the entire city gathers for sunset. Walking the Malecón is the essential Havana experience.

Plaza Vieja — The most photogenic of Old Havana's four main plazas, surrounded by beautifully restored 17th-century buildings in pastel colours. Sidewalk cafés, a microbrewery, and a camera obscura observatory make it a perfect place to linger.

El Capitolio — Havana's most imposing building, modelled after the US Capitol and completed in 1929. The recently restored dome and grand staircase are magnificent. Inside, a 24-carat diamond once marked kilometre zero of Cuba's road network.

Plaza de la Catedral — The most intimate of Old Havana's plazas, dominated by the asymmetrical baroque facade of the Cathedral of Havana (1748). Live music, artisan stalls, and the atmospheric Bodeguita del Medio bar are steps away.

Local Food

Ropa Vieja — Cuba's national dish — shredded beef braised in tomato sauce with peppers, onions, and cumin. The name means 'old clothes' from the shredded texture. Best at family-run paladares with slow-cooked versions.

Cuban Sandwich — Pressed ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard on Cuban bread. Simple, satisfying, and available from street stalls and cafeterias across the city for a few pesos.

Lechón Asado — Whole roasted pork marinated in mojo criollo — a garlicky sour orange sauce that is the foundation of Cuban cooking. Served with congri (rice and black beans), fried plantains, and yuca.

Congri (Moros y Cristianos) — Rice cooked with black beans, sofrito, and pork fat — the ubiquitous side dish that accompanies nearly every Cuban meal. Simple ingredients elevated by technique and time.
