Hoan Kiem Lake — The soul of Hanoi, this serene lake is home to the iconic red Huc Bridge leading to Ngoc Son Temple on a tiny island. Early mornings bring tai chi practitioners and locals exercising along the shaded paths.

Pho — Hanoi's gift to the world — a deeply aromatic beef or chicken broth ladled over rice noodles and herbs. Pho Thin and Pho Gia Truyen are legendary. Breakfast is prime pho time.

Bun Cha — Grilled pork patties and sliced pork belly served with rice vermicelli, fresh herbs, and a sweet-sour dipping broth. Obama ate it with Bourdain at Bun Cha Huong Lien.

Banh Mi — A crispy baguette stuffed with pate, cold cuts, pickled vegetables, cilantro, and chilli. The perfect fusion of French and Vietnamese culinary traditions, available for 15,000-25,000 VND.

Egg Coffee (Ca Phe Trung) — A Hanoi original — strong Vietnamese coffee topped with a thick, creamy whip of egg yolk and condensed milk. Rich, sweet, and utterly unique. Try it at Giang Cafe, the originator.
