Elbphilharmonie — Hamburg's stunning glass wave-shaped concert hall atop a former warehouse. Visit the free Plaza viewing platform at 37m for panoramic harbour views, even without a concert ticket.

Speicherstadt — The world's largest warehouse district, built on timber-pile foundations in the harbour. Now home to the Miniatur Wunderland, coffee roasters, and atmospheric canal tours.

Miniatur Wunderland — An astonishing miniature world spanning 1,545 sqm with incredibly detailed models of cities, airports, and landscapes. Book well in advance — Hamburg's most visited attraction.

St. Michaelis Church (Michel) — The most famous church in northern Germany. Climb the 452 steps (or take the lift) of the 132m copper tower for the best panoramic view of the harbour and city.

Local Food

Fischbrötchen — Hamburg's iconic snack — a crusty roll filled with pickled herring, smoked fish, or shrimp with onions and remoulade. Best from the harbour stalls at Landungsbrücken.

Labskaus — A polarising but traditional sailors' dish of corned beef, potato, and beetroot mash topped with a fried egg, pickled gherkin, and rollmops herring.

Finkenwerder Scholle — A Hamburg classic — plaice pan-fried with bacon, shrimp, and a squeeze of lemon. Named after the Elbe island of Finkenwerder where fishermen perfected it.

Rote Grütze — A beloved northern German dessert of mixed red berries (raspberries, red currants, cherries) thickened into a compote and served with vanilla sauce or cream.
