Römerberg — Frankfurt's reconstructed medieval heart, flanked by half-timbered Fachwerk houses, the Römer town hall with its stepped gable facade, and the Gothic Alte Nikolaikirche. The city's most photographed spot.

Museumsufer (Museum Embankment) — A remarkable row of 13 museums along the south bank of the Main, including the Städel, German Film Museum, and Museum of World Cultures. A cultural mile rivalling any European city.

Städel Museum — One of Germany's most important art museums, spanning from Botticelli and Vermeer through Monet to contemporary works. The underground extension for modern art is architectural brilliance.

Main Tower — The only skyscraper in Frankfurt with a public observation platform, offering stunning 360-degree views from 200 metres. See the 'Mainhattan' skyline, river, and Taunus mountains.

Palmengarten — One of Europe's largest botanical gardens, featuring tropical greenhouses, a rose garden, and themed landscapes from sub-Arctic to rainforest. A green oasis in the city centre.

Local Food

Grüne Soße (Green Sauce) — Frankfurt's signature dish — a cold herb sauce made from seven specific fresh herbs mixed with sour cream and hard-boiled eggs. Traditionally served with boiled potatoes or schnitzel.

Apfelwein (Ebbelwei) — Frankfurt's beloved sour apple wine, served in a traditional Bembel (blue-grey ceramic jug) and drunk from ribbed glasses. Head to the Apfelwein taverns of Sachsenhausen.

Frankfurter Würstchen — The original Frankfurt sausage — thin smoked pork sausages served in pairs with bread and mustard. Not to be confused with the larger Wiener. A street food staple since the 13th century.

Handkäse mit Musik — A pungent translucent cheese marinated in vinegar, oil, and chopped onions. The 'Musik' (music) refers to the digestive aftermath. An acquired taste best paired with Apfelwein.
