Top Places to Visit

Beach Park — A massive water park and resort complex 25 km south of Fortaleza, featuring the Insano — once the world's tallest water slide at 41 metres. Rides, lazy rivers, and wave pools for all ages.

Dragão do Mar Centre — A striking modernist cultural centre with a contemporary art museum, cinema, theatre, planetarium, and the city's liveliest nightlife strip of bars and restaurants.

Praia do Futuro — A 5-km stretch of wide golden sand with powerful waves, massive beach barracas (restaurant-bars), and Thursday night forró parties. The most vibrant beach experience in the city.

Beira-Mar Promenade — A 3-km seafront promenade lined with coconut palms, food kiosks, and an evening craft fair. The social centre of Fortaleza — walk, jog, or cycle as the sun sets.

Mercado Central de Fortaleza — A vast market with over 500 stalls selling hammocks (Ceará is famous for them), cashew nuts, cachaça, lace, leather goods, and regional crafts. Bargaining is expected.

Local Food

Caranguejo (Crab) — Fortaleza's most iconic meal: a mound of cooked crabs cracked and eaten with your hands at a beach barraca or specialist crab restaurant. Thursday night is crab night across the city.

Tapioca — Crispy or soft cassava-flour crepes folded and filled with sweet (condensed milk, coconut, banana) or savoury (cheese, dried beef, butter) fillings. The northeast's answer to crepes.

Peixada Cearense — A traditional Cearense fish stew with fresh catch, tomatoes, peppers, coconut milk, and coriander, served with pirão (fish-flour porridge) and rice. Coastal comfort food.

Carne de Sol — Sun-dried salted beef, grilled and served with baião de dois (rice and beans cooked together with cheese), farofa, and vinaigrette salsa. The signature dish of the sertão (Brazilian outback).
