Top Places to Visit

Cidade Velha (Old Town) — Enter through the Arco da Vila into a tranquil maze of cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and orange trees. Home to the cathedral, bishop's palace, and archaeological museum.

Sé Catedral de Faro — A Gothic cathedral rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, featuring a baroque interior, a bone chapel, and a bell tower with sweeping views over the old town and Ria Formosa lagoon.

Ria Formosa Natural Park — A vast coastal lagoon stretching 60 km along the Algarve, home to flamingos, seahorses, and migratory birds. Take a boat tour to deserted barrier island beaches.

Ilha Deserta (Barreta Island) — An uninhabited barrier island accessible by ferry from Faro marina. Pristine white sand stretching for kilometres with only one restaurant. The southernmost point of mainland Portugal.

Ilha de Faro (Faro Beach) — A long sandy beach on a barrier island connected to the mainland by bridge. Calm lagoon waters on one side, Atlantic surf on the other. Beach bars and restaurants line the strip.

Local Food

Cataplana de Marisco — The Algarve's signature dish — a rich seafood stew of clams, prawns, and fish cooked in a hinged copper cataplana pot with tomatoes, garlic, and white wine.

Sardines Assadas — Charcoal-grilled sardines served on a slice of bread to catch the juices. Best from May to October when sardines are at their fattest. A simple, iconic Portuguese taste.

Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato — Clams cooked in white wine, garlic, olive oil, and fresh coriander. Mop up the incredible broth with crusty bread. Named after a 19th-century Portuguese poet.

Dom Rodrigo — A traditional Algarve sweet made from egg yolks, sugar, almonds, and cinnamon, wrapped in shiny foil. A legacy of the region's Moorish confectionery heritage.
