Top Places to Visit

Parque Santander — The main square of Cúcuta, shaded by giant trees and surrounded by colonial and Republican-era buildings. A gathering place for locals day and night, with street vendors and shoe shiners.

Biblioteca Pública Julio Pérez Ferrero — An important cultural institution housing a significant book collection, art exhibitions, and historical archives. The building itself is an architectural landmark of the city.

Catedral de San José — A neoclassical cathedral rebuilt after the 1875 earthquake that destroyed much of the city. Its twin towers and rose window anchor the eastern side of Parque Santander.

Torre del Reloj — A tall clock tower visible across the city centre, serving as a meeting point and orientation landmark. Illuminated at night, it's one of Cúcuta's most recognizable structures.

Local Food

Mute Santandereano — A hearty tripe soup with corn, potatoes, chickpeas, and vegetables — the signature dish of the Santander region. Rich, warming, and packed with flavour.

Arepa de Maíz Pelao — Thick corn arepas ground from nixtamalized corn, grilled and served with butter or cheese. The cucuteña version is larger and heartier than coastal arepas.

Hallaca — A Venezuelan-influenced tamale wrapped in plantain leaves, filled with a stew of pork, chicken, olives, capers, and raisins. A border-region Christmas speciality enjoyed year-round.

Cabrito — Roasted young goat — a Santander speciality. The meat is marinated, slow-roasted, and served with arepas and yuca. A rustic regional delicacy.
