Gangaramaya Temple — An extraordinary Buddhist temple packed with an eclectic collection of statues, relics, and artefacts from around the world. The adjacent Seema Malaka floating meditation pavilion on Beira Lake is stunning.

Galle Face Green — Colombo's beloved seafront urban park stretching 500 metres along the Indian Ocean. At sunset, the green fills with families, kite-flyers, and street food vendors selling isso wade (shrimp fritters).

Pettah Market — Colombo's bustling commercial heart — a labyrinth of narrow streets, each specialising in different goods: electronics, textiles, jewellery, spices, and household items. Vibrant and overwhelming.

National Museum — A grand colonial-era building housing Sri Lanka's most important historical collection including the throne and crown of Kandyan kings, ancient art, and archaeological treasures.

Colombo Lighthouse — The oldest lighthouse on the Sri Lankan coast, built in 1857 in the heart of the Fort district. The surrounding area features colonial-era buildings, modern hotels, and the World Trade Centre towers.

Local Food

Rice and Curry — The quintessential Sri Lankan meal — steamed rice surrounded by an array of small curries, sambols, dhal, and papadam. Every restaurant has its own version, and it is eaten daily.

Isso Wade — Crispy deep-fried lentil fritters topped with a whole prawn, sold along Galle Face Green at sunset. Crunchy, spicy, and utterly addictive — Colombo's iconic street snack.

Hoppers (Appa) — Bowl-shaped crispy pancakes made from fermented rice flour and coconut milk. Egg hoppers have a fried egg in the centre. Best dipped in coconut sambol and lunu miris.

Devilled Prawns — Succulent prawns stir-fried with chillies, onions, capsicum, and a tangy-sweet sauce. A uniquely Sri Lankan Chinese-influenced dish found on every restaurant menu.
