Local Food

Sichuan Hotpot — Chengdu's most iconic meal — a bubbling cauldron of fiery red chilli oil and Sichuan peppercorns, where you cook thinly sliced meats, offal, vegetables, and tofu at the table. The numbing-spicy sensation is addictive.

Dan Dan Mian — Thin noodles tossed in a spicy sauce of chilli oil, Sichuan peppercorn, minced pork, and preserved vegetables. Sold from every street stall, it is the definitive Chengdu street snack.

Mapo Tofu — Soft silken tofu in a fiery sauce of doubanjiang chilli paste, fermented black beans, minced pork, and Sichuan peppercorn. Invented in Chengdu in the 1860s and now loved worldwide.

Chuan Chuan Xiang (Skewer Hotpot) — Street-style hotpot where individual skewers of meat, vegetables, and tofu are dunked into a communal pot of spicy broth. Pay by counting your skewers — social and affordable.
