Blue Medina — Chefchaouen's entire old town is painted in mesmerizing shades of blue — powder blue, cobalt, indigo, and sky. Every alley, doorway, and staircase is a photograph. The tradition may date to the 1930s Jewish community.

Kasbah Museum — A 15th-century fortress in the main square housing a small ethnographic museum with Riffian costumes, weapons, and musical instruments. The garden courtyard and tower offer views over the medina.

Ras el-Maa Waterfall — A small but picturesque waterfall at the eastern edge of the medina where locals come to wash clothes and socialize. The surrounding area has cafes and is the starting point for Rif Mountain hikes.

Plaza Uta el-Hammam — The central square of Chefchaouen, shaded by trees and surrounded by cafes, the Grand Mosque with its octagonal minaret, and the Kasbah. The best spot for people-watching and mint tea.

Grand Mosque — An unusual mosque with a distinctive octagonal minaret — unique in Morocco. Non-Muslims cannot enter, but the exterior and its position on the main square make it a central landmark.

Local Food

Tagine with Kefta — Meatball tagine simmered in a spiced tomato sauce with a cracked egg on top — a Rif Mountain specialty. Best enjoyed at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the blue medina.

Goat Cheese (Jben) — Fresh goat cheese from the Rif Mountains, soft and tangy. Sold at the market and served with bread, olives, and olive oil for breakfast. A regional specialty not found elsewhere in Morocco.

Bissara — A thick, warming soup of dried fava beans blended with cumin, olive oil, and paprika. The quintessential Rif Mountain breakfast, served for just a few dirhams at medina stalls.

Kaab el Ghazal — Crescent-shaped almond pastries scented with orange blossom water — the name means gazelle ankles. Delicate, sweet, and paired perfectly with mint tea.
