Top Places to Visit

Parque Nacional El Ávila (Waraira Repano) — The magnificent 2,765-metre mountain that forms Caracas' dramatic northern backdrop. Hike through cloud forest, take the teleférico cable car, or summit for views to the Caribbean coast.

Plaza Bolívar — The historic centre of Caracas with an equestrian statue of Simón Bolívar surrounded by the Cathedral, Capitol building, and City Hall. The birthplace of Venezuelan independence.

Panteón Nacional — A grand neoclassical building housing the remains of Simón Bolívar and other national heroes. The ornate ceiling paintings by Tito Salas depict scenes from Bolívar's life.

Teleférico de Caracas — A spectacular cable car ride from Maripérez station to the top of El Ávila (2,105m), offering breathtaking views of both the Caracas valley and the Caribbean Sea beyond.

Local Food

Arepa — Venezuela's iconic cornmeal pocket, split and stuffed with fillings: reina pepiada (chicken-avocado), pabellón (shredded beef, beans, plantain), or domino (black beans and cheese). The national food.

Pabellón Criollo — Venezuela's national dish: shredded beef in tomato sauce, black beans, white rice, and fried sweet plantain. Simple, satisfying, and deeply comforting.

Cachapa — A thick, sweet corn pancake folded around melting queso de mano (hand-pressed cheese). The contrast of sweet corn and salty cheese is addictive. Best from street vendors.

Tequeños — Sticks of white cheese wrapped in dough and deep-fried until golden. Venezuela's favourite party snack and appetiser — impossible to eat just one.
