Top Places to Visit

Kalyan Minaret — The 47-metre 12th-century minaret so beautiful that even Genghis Khan spared it when he destroyed the city. Its 14 bands of ornamental brickwork are a masterpiece of Islamic architecture.

Ark Fortress — A massive 5th-century fortress that served as the residence of Bukhara's emirs for over a millennium. Inside: the throne room, mosque, dungeons, and the emirs' reception halls.

Lyabi-Hauz — A charming 17th-century pool surrounded by mulberry trees, teahouses, and two madrasas. The heart of old Bukhara's social life — sit under the trees and sip tea as locals have for centuries.

Trading Domes — Three 16th-century covered bazaars — Taki-Zargaron (jewellers), Taki-Telpak Furushon (hatmakers), and Taki-Sarrafon (money changers) — where artisans still trade under domed ceilings.

Poi Kalyan Complex — Bukhara's most iconic ensemble — the Kalyan Minaret, Kalyan Mosque (with 288 domes), and Mir-i-Arab Madrasa (still an active Islamic school) arranged around a vast courtyard.

Local Food

Plov (Osh) — The king of Uzbek cuisine — rice cooked in a massive kazan (cauldron) with lamb, carrots, chickpeas, onions, cumin, and garlic. Bukharan plov features raisins and quince for a sweeter flavour.

Bukharan Lepyoshka (Non) — The signature Bukharan flatbread — thick, round, and stamped with decorative patterns. Baked in clay tandoor ovens, it stays fresh for days and is the centrepiece of every meal.

Shashlik — Skewered and charcoal-grilled cubes of marinated lamb, served with raw onion rings, vinegar, and fresh bread. Found at every street corner and outdoor cafe.

Manti — Large steamed dumplings filled with spiced lamb and onion, served with sour cream (smetana) or a tomato-based sauce. Heavier and more satisfying than their Turkish cousins.
