Markt (Market Square) — The magnificent central square surrounded by colorful stepped-gable guild houses and dominated by the towering Belfry. Horse-drawn carriages depart from here, and the Wednesday morning market continues a tradition centuries old.

Belfry of Bruges — The 83-meter bell tower has dominated the Bruges skyline since the 13th century. Climb 366 narrow steps to the top for panoramic views and a close encounter with the 47-bell carillon that still plays today.

Burg Square — An intimate square just steps from the Markt, surrounded by architectural treasures spanning seven centuries: the Gothic Town Hall, the Renaissance Old Civil Registry, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood.

Basilica of the Holy Blood — This double chapel houses a venerated relic said to contain a cloth with the blood of Jesus Christ, brought from Jerusalem in 1150. The upper chapel is ornately neo-Gothic; the lower chapel is stark Romanesque.

Groeninge Museum — A superb collection of Flemish Primitive masterpieces by Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, and Gerard David, plus Belgian Surrealism by Magritte. Small but world-class, with van Eyck's Madonna with Canon van der Paele as the crown jewel.

Local Food

Belgian Frites — Thick-cut, double-fried potato frites served in a paper cone with mayonnaise or dozens of other sauces. The best come from frituren (fry shops) like De Garre or stands in the Markt. A Belgian institution.

Belgian Chocolate & Pralines — Bruges is a chocolate lover's paradise with over 50 chocolate shops. Try handmade pralines (filled chocolates invented in Belgium), truffles, and hot chocolate from artisan chocolatiers like The Chocolate Line.

Moules-Frites — Mussels steamed in white wine, celery, and onions, served with a mountain of crispy frites. Belgium's national dish and a Bruges classic, best enjoyed at a bustling brasserie.
