Cathedral of Brasília — A stunning hyperboloid structure of 16 curved concrete columns reaching skyward like hands in prayer, connected by stained glass. The interior is flooded with coloured light. Free entry.

National Congress — Brazil's most iconic modernist building: twin 28-storey towers flanked by the dome of the Senate and the inverted dome of the Chamber of Deputies. Free guided tours reveal the stunning interiors.

JK Memorial — A memorial to President Juscelino Kubitschek who built Brasília in just 41 months. The striking curved building houses his tomb, personal items, and a history of the capital's audacious construction.

Palácio da Alvorada — The elegant presidential palace with its distinctive inverted-arch columns reflected in a mirror pool. One of Niemeyer's most refined designs. Visible from outside; occasional guided tours.

Palácio do Planalto — The working office of Brazil's president on the Plaza of Three Powers. The changing of the guard ceremony happens on Sundays. The ramp and colonnade are architectural masterpieces.

Local Food

Feijoada — Brazil's national dish of black beans stewed with pork, served with rice, collard greens, farofa, and orange slices. Saturday lunch in Brasília is feijoada day, just like the rest of Brazil.

Galinhada — A hearty rice dish cooked with chicken, turmeric (açafrão), pequi fruit, and guariroba palm heart. A Central-Western Brazilian speciality reflecting the cerrado's unique ingredients.

Pastel de Feira — Crispy deep-fried pastry pockets filled with cheese, ground beef, or palm hearts. Best from the weekend fairs at Torre de TV and Asa Sul markets, with fresh sugarcane juice.

Pamonha — Corn dough wrapped in corn husks and boiled or baked, filled with cheese, sausage, or served sweet. A cerrado staple — simpler and more rustic than a tamale.
